Made To Measure Suits

The Abbott & Jones made-to-measure journey starts on the fitting blocks, which have now been completely re-developed in a contemporary fashion to offer clients an enhanced fit. We have also introduced a new three-tier system and suits can now be made in one of three workshops – with a trained tailor on standby to suggest the best one based on a customer’s individual needs and style.

Made-to-Measure is, ultimately, an experience which offers clients optimum fit and comfort – but the luxury of choice is also of paramount importance. As part of our MTM service, we have created a focused edit of 16 fabric collections, including all of our signature styles. These cover all kinds of occasions and requirements; from overcoating cloths to lightweight or winter-weight suitings, jacketings and formalwear fabrics. These will be complemented by exclusive seasonal additions, introduced at the start of each new collection.

With a turnaround time of just four to five weeks, the Abbott & Jones Made-to-Measure service combines our renowned tailoring expertise with superior quality and a thoroughly modern service. It’s the perfect solution for the gentleman who values style as well as substance.

The Made-to-Measure Tailoring Process

The first consultation is straightforward and can be split into 3 parts; selecting the cloth, taking measurements and choosing the details. It is a simple process but does involve many key decisions. Your Made-to-Measure consultant will be on hand to guide you through this process and offer advise where needed however it does pay off doing some research on the kind of suit you would like before your appointment.

The Cloth

With a focused edit of 16 fabric collections for the summer and a further 16 for the winter, you are spoilt for choice: options range from super fine wools and soft flannels to breezy seersucker fabrics for summer suiting and heavier weight flannels, eveningwear and velvet for winter.

This choice is a matter of weight, occasion and pattern – lightweight (typically 8oz-9oz), heavyweight (14oz-15oz), or something in between. A 12oz is good trans-seasonal choice. Of course it is also a matter of colour, weave and pattern – chalk stripe, bold or subtle checks and so on.

At this stage you will need to select the level of construction required - half-canvassed or fully-canvassed. Full canvas suits are constructed with a layer of horsehair canvas under the wool fabric to offer shape and to ensure an elegant drape. In a half canvas suit the layer of horsehair only runs through the chest and lapel of the jacket. This option is usually less costly, lighter weight and can be cooler.

The Details

Last but by no means least is to choose the details that makes the suit truly personal to you. Options include lapel style and width; lining colour; belt loops, side adjusters or brace buttons; trouser turn-ups (cuffs) or a plain finish; type of pockets; ticket pocket or none; button style and many more.

The Final Fittng

4-5 weeks later your suit will arrive back at the Abbott & Jones store when you will be contacted to come in for the final fitting. The consultant will ask you to try on the suit and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the suit fits perfectly. Our in-house tailor will make the alterations needed and a week later will be ready to pick up.

Our Made-to-Measure service is available in all our stores. Suits start from CHF1,299.
